Back to School: First-Day Jitters

I’m a grown-up in a sea of youngsters

My first day back to school for Intro to Piano Technology was incredibly challenging and immensely rewarding. Bumping into old friends and striving to make new ones feeds the soul. Since I primarily work from home, meeting people as an adult can be a challenge because I’m not into hanging around bars, clubs, or other places that are generally crowded. I struggle to strike up conversations with strangers not knowing if we have shared interests. With work, it’s easy because as a sales guy, I get told ‘no’ a lot and I don’t let that dissuade me. In my personal life, it’s a lot more challenging.

My instructor is an expert in his field. Truthfully, that’s why I called him when first evaluating the Steinway to determine if it was suitable for restoration. I’m excited to be working with him and look forward to diving deeper into the inner workings of piano action.

Since I originally was a music teacher, long before I was in sales, making worksheets is the easiest way for me to learn a subject. I teach it to myself with the intent of planning out how I would teach others. It’s like building a scaffold so that you can build a larger, more difficult structure within. That being said, I designed some worksheets that are based on the textbook drawings of an upright piano’s vertical action – that is the action where the hammers are straight up and down.
